In a bid to foster a love for reading and learning among underprivileged children, the Rotary Club of Kyadondo partnered with Mummy Foundation to launch the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) project. This initiative, held in conjunction with the Makindye Division-based foundation, aimed to provide a supportive environment for children to develop essential literacy skills. This run under Past President Richard Enoch Mwami’s regime.
Mummy Foundation, established to empower the girl child through reading and writing, soon expanded its scope to include boys as well. Recognizing the immense need, the foundation stepped in to support children of market vendors and low-income families who often find themselves unattended at home.
During the DEAR week, Rotary Club of Kyadondo members collaborated with Mummy Foundation to:
- Stock the library with books and educational materials
- Conduct morning and afternoon reading sessions with the children
- Provide spelling lessons and facilitate interactive learning experiences
- Facilitate teachers to support the initiative throughout the week
The project culminated in a heartwarming ceremony, coinciding with the District Governor's visit. The children received scholastic materials and books, symbolizing the club's commitment to their educational journey.
Special recognition goes to Rtn. Annet Kiconco for spearheading the collaboration and material collection efforts. Rtn. Stella Mbabazi and Rtn. Irene Nyekon also played pivotal roles in the project's success.
