In Luuka District, Uganda, the Rotary Club of Kyadondo, under Rotary District 9213's Basic Education & Literacy Enhancement Program (BELEP), embarked on a mission to improve the quality of education. The focus: renovating the Early Childhood Development Block at Naigobya Primary School.
Uganda has 11.5 million children between 3-12 years, constituting 25% of the population. However, limited access to Early Childhood Development services hinders their growth. The Universal Primary Education program, introduced in 1997, faces challenges: overcrowding, poor infrastructure, demotivated teachers, and inadequate supervision.
Built in 1954, Naigobya Primary School serves over 800 pupils from low-income families. Assessments revealed:
- Food shortages impacting learning
- Dilapidated classrooms and inadequate infrastructure
- Outdated learning materials
- Unsuitable sanitation facilities
The Rotary Club of Kyadondo's project focuses on:
1. Developing and renovating the existing classrooms into an ECD centre
2. Supporting menstrual hygiene management among school girls
3. Improving water and sanitation amenities
To mobilize resources, the club hosted a charity golf tournament, partnering with the Uganda Golf Club. The event aims to raise UGX 400,000,000 for the Early Childhood Development Centre.
- Social media campaign targeting golf enthusiasts, sponsors, and the public
- Local media outreach through newspapers, radio, and TV stations
- Press releases and promotional materials
The golf fundraiser aimed to:
- Create awareness about the importance of Early Childhood Education
- Generate resources for the renovation project
- Improve the learning environment for Naigobya Primary School students
By supporting Naigobya Primary School, the Rotary Club of Kyadondo strives to:
- Increase access to quality education
- Reduce school dropout rates
- Foster a reading culture
- Combat teenage pregnancies
